Mohanlal Sukhadia University (NAAC accreditation “A” Grade) was the first in Rajasthan to start Post-Graduate Program in Biotechnology in the year 1997 followed by a three year B.Sc. Biotechnology Course from the academic session 2005-2006. The department initially started functioning from the Department of Botany, University College of Science (old campus of the university), but is now located in a modern independent building complex “Vigyan Bhawan, Block B” in the new campus of the University.

The department was founded in 1997 by Prof. B.L. Chaudhary with a vision to foster and promote innovation in biotechnology. He became the first Incharge of the department. The holistic model of education, conceived and enriched by the illustrious founder facilitated the creative talent of the young minds. His vision was carried forward by Prof. S. D. Purohit during the period from 2004 to 2012. The department was flourished at its best under his sagacious guidance. His guidance not only was at par with the current developments but also contributed to the expansion of the body of knowledge in his field of expertise. Traditions continued under the able guidance of Prof. Kanika Sharma. All the previous and subsequent course directors have contributed their best for progressive growth of the department. Ever since its establishment the facilities, academics and research in the department have grown leaps and bounds.
